Michael Phelps Is A Team Player
May. 15th 2009
Michael Phelps is a phenomenal athlete. He has won 14 career Olympic gold medals, the most by any Olympian. As of 2008, he holds seven world records in swimming. At the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps took home eight gold medals. He won the World Swimmer of the Year Award in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 – and earned Sports Illustrated magazine’s Sportsman of the Year Award in 2008.
Although Phelps has had some amazing individual accomplishments, he was clearly most proud of his 4 x 100m medley relay with teammates Brendan Hansen, Aaron Piersol, and Jason Lezak when they set a new world record in a come-from-behind victory.
Phelps has become accustomed to winning individual races and his celebrations have become quite mild. However, when the US men’s swim team won the relay, Phelps was ecstatic. He was pounding his chest, hugging his teammates and sharing the victory.
It’s one thing to stand out individually and be recognized for your accomplishments, but there is something to be said about accomplishing great things as a team that makes big victories all the more meaningful. Choose your partners wisely and share your entrepreneurial hopes, dreams and accomplishments with your team.
Please take a moment to watch this brief video comparing Phelps’s individual celebration compared to his team celebration: Phelps Individual vs. Team Win.
